The Directory for Queen’s Park

The surest way of finding good, reliable, businesses and traders is the recommendation of friends and neighbours. Which is why we asked members of the Queen’s Park Area Residents’ Association (QPARA) for their suggestions. We published the first printed Directory for Queen’s Park, in 1991, with print run of three thousand and distributed it to all the households in the QPARA area.

First directory 1991

We set out to provide a directory tailored precisely to help the people in the streets to which we delivered. So we included as much other stuff as we could find: Community organisations, the Council, healthcare, schools, sports centres, transport links and markets were all added. And we made sure only relevant stuff was included; for example we listed only local post offices – not every one in North West London! We even included the locations of public telephone boxes – something that mobile phones made unnecessary in later editions.

We wanted to make sure that our information is accurate and reliable. So we made sure that any listing has a satisfied customer living locally. Every suggestion we get is carefully considered before being added to our live database, to make sure the details are correct and relevant to the areas in which we publish.

Now, twenty years on, we still list only businesses and organisations that the community can trust. You can search for a suggestion or recommend a local tradesman or service.

As an ethical business we take our responsibilities seriously.  We do not list or advertise  businesses or organisations who seem to us to have questionable practices. Get-rich-quick schemes like pyramid selling or firms with excessive charges (however legal) are just not included.

So no scams, no premium-rate phone numbers, no upfront fees, no astronomical loan rates – just fair deals.

The next printed edition of the Directory for Queen’s Park & Kensal Rise will be published in February 2012.

Queen’s Park Area Residents’ Association

There is a strong sense of community within Queen’s Park with almost a village atmosphere. This is reflected in the activities of the Queen’s Park Area Residents’ Association (QPARA) which has been working for the past 30 years to preserve and improve the area for the community. QPARA represents community interests to Brent Council and organises social events, such as the highly successful Queen’s Park Day in September and the biennial Open Gardens Day in June. QPARA also regularly meets with the Corporation of London, who is responsible for the park itself.

Once one of North London’s best-kept secrets, the attractions of Queen’s Park are now widely known. With the park at its heart, the unique charm of its late-Victorian architecture and the abundance of good-sized gardens, makes it a refreshingly green and pleasant part of the city. The local economy is growing too, with new businesses, shops and restaurants opening on both sides of the park.

The QPARA area lies mainly between Salusbury and Chamberlayne Roads to the east and west and between Chevening and Harvist Roads to the north and south. A few streets to the east of Salusbury Road are also included. The Queen’s Park Conservation Area now covers all the streets between Salusbury Road and Chamberlayne Road where the preservation of the character of the environment is considered so important that it is protected by statute.

We welcome members of all ages, from all cultures and political standpoints, full members must live in the area but anyone can enjoy most of the benefits of membership as an Associate Member.

QPARA’s effectiveness is dependant entirely on you, the residents, without whose support none of its activities would be possible. QPARA meets monthly, for more information about our activities and much more on the area go to our website www.qpark.org.uk.
